ScotRail shortlists manufacturers for new suburban train fleet

ScotRail has advanced its procurement process for a new suburban train fleet, moving to the Invitation to Negotiate (ITN) stage. The project aims to introduce at least 69 new electric and battery-electric trains, with options for an additional 37 units, to replace aging diesel models.

Five manufacturers have been shortlisted for the contract: Alstom Engineering and Services Limited, Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF S.A.), Hitachi Rail Limited, Siemens Mobility Limited, and Stadler Rail Schweiz AG. The procurement covers the design, manufacture, testing, and long-term technical support for the fleet.

The new trains are expected to enter service in the early 2030s, serving routes including East Kilbride, Fife, the Borders, and Glasgow’s inner suburban network. Key features will include modern air-conditioning, improved real-time passenger information, enhanced accessibility with reduced platform gaps, and dedicated spaces for bicycles and wheelchairs.

One specific project involves the electrification of an eight-mile stretch of the Borders railway between Edinburgh and Tweedbank, supported by a £26.2 million Scottish government funding scheme.
