Scott Bessent criticizes Canada over failed trade deal

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has criticized Canada following the breakdown of trade negotiations between the two nations. During an interview with Fox News, Bessent compared the geopolitical tension to a playground interaction between a German Shepherd and a Dachshund, characterizing Canada as a ‘small, very loud barking dog’ that is bothering a larger one.

The dispute follows three days of trade talks held between August 19 and 21, which failed to result in a deal. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed that the United States altered the terms of the agreement at the last minute, while the U.S. maintains that a high-quality offer was presented and subsequently rejected.

Bessent accused Carney of prioritizing his political image over the best decisions for the Canadian economy. He also downplayed the potential economic impact of a trade war, stating he is prepared to debate the ‘statistical significance’ of Canadian tariffs on American prices, asserting that the effect on U.S. costs would be minimal.
