Parolee Scott Matheson, 45, was sentenced in Newcastle District Court to a maximum of 12 years in prison with an eight‑year non‑parole period for his role in the arson of the Lake Macquarie City Council administration building. On 27 November 2024 he and an accomplice broke into the council building at Speers Point, poured petrol on the ground floor and ignited a blaze that caused an estimated $38‑40 million in damage. The fire displaced about 400 council staff, forced the council to relocate meetings and will require repairs that are not expected to be completed until October 2027.

Investigators also linked Matheson to a drive‑by shooting at a residence in Elermore Vale on 29 January, carried out for drugs and cash, and police discovered six firearms hidden in cavities at his Bar Beach home. The court heard the arson was contracted by a developer and was motivated by Matheson’s need to pay rent and purchase drugs.
