Scottish Borders Council approves affordable housing on former church site

Scottish Borders Council has approved a plan by Eildon Housing Association to develop affordable housing on the site of a former Victorian church in Galashiels. The project will consist of two blocks containing four houses and 15 flats in Gala Park.

The site previously housed St Aidan's Church and hall, which were demolished following failed conversion attempts. While the development faced objections regarding privacy and increased traffic, the council determined the plan represents a reasonable compromise to ensure economic viability and provide centrally located affordable housing.

In a separate development in Coventry, planners have authorized the urgent demolition of the derelict Allesley Hotel. The site, which has been vacant since 2022 and has been subject to arson, is slated to be replaced by 55 new homes by developer Avant Homes.
