Scottish councils launch initiatives to combat rising graffiti

Local councils in Scotland are intensifying efforts to combat rising graffiti and vandalism. In Aberdeen, the City Council is working to remove graffiti from council-owned property, parks, and highways. Between January and July 2026, the council cleared 121 reported instances, 21 of which were classified as offensive. To support these efforts, £650,000 was previously allocated for environmental improvements, including £150,000 for a dedicated city centre cleansing team.

Similarly, Renfrewshire Council has launched a targeted removal programme following an increase in graffiti across the region. The initiative prioritises town centres, public buildings, parks, and main transport routes, such as bridges and road signs. Community safety officers are collaborating with Police Scotland to identify areas with repeated incidents. In response to the issue, officials are also considering the implementation of dedicated graffiti walls in suitable locations.
