Scottish fishing industry seeks compensation for offshore wind impacts

The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) is calling for long-term compensation for fishing businesses impacted by offshore wind development. SFF Chief Executive Elspeth Macdonald argued that if energy infrastructure warrants compensation for land-based impacts, the same principle should apply to those losing access to productive fishing grounds at sea.

Separately, the Scottish Government has defended its decision to name the Clyde Fishermen’s Association (CFA) as the sole fishing industry organization in an initial memorandum of understanding for the Clyde Cod Targeted Scientific Programme (TSP). Fisheries Minister Jim Fairlie stated the arrangement was intended to expedite data collection and project establishment, noting that the agreement is voluntary and non-binding. He clarified that the decision does not limit future participation from other independent fishers or representative bodies.
