Scottish fishing industry sees strong herring season amid July landing declines

The Scottish fishing industry is experiencing contrasting trends between seasonal activity and recent economic statistics. The summer herring season is currently in full swing, with vessels operating in grounds northeast of Peterhead and extending toward Shetland. Reports from the vessel Artemis BF 60 indicate a good abundance of high-quality, large-sized herring, which aligns with ICES advice suggesting a 21% quota increase for next year.

However, monthly statistics for July 2026 show a decline in overall landings. According to the Marine Management Organisation, the value of Scottish fish landings fell by 11% and tonnage decreased by 26% compared to July 2025. While ports like Fraserburgh saw significant increases in both value and tonnage, major hubs like Lerwick and Scalloway experienced sharp declines. Peterhead, the UK’s busiest fishing port, reported a 3% decrease in landing value and a 21% drop in tonnage for the month.
