Scottish Labour leadership race narrows as candidates chase endorsements

The Scottish Labour Party is preparing for a leadership contest that opens nominations on Monday. Three MSPs – Michael Marra, Joe Fagan and Monica Lennon – have entered the race to replace Anas Sarwar. To appear on the ballot, each contender must secure the backing of at least three Scottish Labour MSPs and MPs, plus three affiliated organisations, two of which must be trade unions.

So far, Michael Marra is the only candidate who has met the parliamentary endorsement threshold, with five MPs and seven MSPs publicly supporting him. Monica Lennon and Joe Fagan have struggled to gather the required signatures; Lennon in particular faces “a growing sense … that she will fail to make the ballot”, according to party observers. Analysts predict a likely all‑male final ballot of Marra and Fagan if Lennon cannot gather enough support. The contest comes amid a period of internal tension for Scottish Labour, which has lost five consecutive Holyrood elections to the SNP.
