Scottish toddler with rare sun sensitivity gains indoor safety

Mollie Murray, a two-year-old from Montrose, Scotland, can now play safely inside her home with the curtains open following the installation of specialized UV-blocking film. Mollie is the only child in the UK diagnosed with her specific variant of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic condition that causes extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation.

Because the condition has no cure, Mollie is at risk of severe skin damage and is reportedly 10,000 times more likely to develop skin cancer than other children. To stay safe, she must wear full-length protective clothing, hats, gloves, and sunglasses when outdoors, and can typically only venture outside after dark.

The installation of the UV-resistant film was made possible through funding from The Archie Foundation. Her mother, Kirsty Campbell, noted that the support has significantly improved Mollie’s quality of life, allowing her to engage in normal activities like drawing in daylight and looking out of windows without the constant need for total darkness.
