Scouting America removes diversity spaces at West Virginia Jamboree under Pentagon pressure

Scouting America, the organization formerly known as the Boy Scouts of America, eliminated dedicated spaces for gay youth, women and scouts of color at its National Jamboree in the mountains of West Virginia. The decision follows pressure from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who warned that the Pentagon could end its century‑old partnership with the group if it did not curb what he called “woke” policies.

About 15,000 scouts, leaders and volunteers are attending the ten‑day event. Some participants have withdrawn in protest. A six‑page memorandum obtained by gay‑rights activist James Dale outlines how the Pentagon will monitor compliance. Scouting America says it remains committed to welcoming all youth, but the changes have sparked criticism of the organization’s new inclusion focus after its 2024 rebranding.
