SD Guthrie expands Liverpool manufacturing facility

SD Guthrie International (SDGI), the downstream division of SD Guthrie Berhad, has expanded its manufacturing facility in Liverpool, United Kingdom, with a new enzymatic interesterification (EIE) plant. The expansion introduces two independent EIE production lines, each capable of producing up to 20,000 tonnes.

The facility utilizes an enzyme-based process to rearrange fatty acids within fat structures. This method operates under milder conditions than chemical interesterification and does not require post-treatment, which SDGI states improves efficiency and reduces environmental impact and effluent generation. The infrastructure upgrade also includes new storage tanks, a loading bay, a weighbridge, and an effluent treatment plant.

According to SDGI, the new capability allows for the production of tailored palm-based fat solutions for various food applications, including margarines, spreads, bakery fats, biscuit fillings, and confectionery. The investment aims to strengthen the company’s ability to transform palm oil into higher-value, specialized products.
