Regional political tensions rise over waste management and constitutional procedures

In Croatia, significant political tension has emerged regarding the management of waste from Gospić. The SDP has demanded that companies Holcim Hrvatska and NEXE release specific criteria for assessing the suitability of waste for energy recovery, citing concerns over elevated levels of antimony, cobalt, and chlorine. Additionally, the Parliamentary Committee for Internal Policy and National Security has scheduled a closed session to discuss the Gospić waste situation to avoid political exploitation. A scientific advisory council, led by Rector Stjepan Lakušić, is also working to provide the government with expert materials for remediation.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Srđan Mazalica of the SNSD criticized Jelena Trivić regarding the use of the constitutional veto. Mazalica argued that the veto is a precise mechanism that can only be applied to decisions already made by the Presidency, rather than being used as a preemptive tool against political actions.

Separately, HDZ MEP Željana Zovko reported receiving a response from the European Commission regarding a complaint about the glorification of Ratko Mladić. The Commission stated that there is no place for the glorification of war criminals or the denial of genocide within the European Union or candidate states.
