Sea Cargo Charter reports emission cuts as shipping industry seeks stronger climate regulation

The Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) released its 2026 Annual Disclosure Report showing that 20 of the 29 charterers who also reported in 2024 reduced their emission intensity in 2025, narrowing the gap to the International Maritime Organization’s minimum trajectory to 11.6% behind target. The report highlights operational measures such as speed optimisation and weather routing as key drivers, while warning that further progress will require global regulatory incentives.

In a related development, the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) published a report urging the European Union to treat methane abatement as a strategic priority. The five‑point action plan calls for explicit policy recognition, real‑world data verification, funding incentives, industry collaboration and stronger EU leadership at the IMO. MAMII argues that existing technologies can cut methane slip by 60‑70%, but policy certainty remains the main barrier to large‑scale deployment.
