Chinese shipping company Sea Legend is launching the first regular container service via the Arctic, a route dubbed the 'Ice Silk Road'. The service connects Ningbo, China, to Felixstowe, United Kingdom, by traversing Russia's Northern Sea Route.

By utilizing the Arctic route, transit times are expected to be reduced by approximately half, dropping from the traditional 40-day journey via the Suez Canal to roughly 20 days. This shift offers significant potential for fuel and cost savings while allowing vessels to bypass geopolitical hotspots and security risks in the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb strait, and the Suez Canal.

Russia's state nuclear energy company, Rosatom, which manages the Northern Sea Route, has granted transit permits to seven ships for the upcoming season. Sea Legend plans to conduct eight voyages through late October, capitalizing on the Arctic summer when ice conditions are most favorable for navigation.
