Sea level rise driven by human activity increases extreme weather risks

A scientific study warns that human-induced global warming is causing sea levels to rise, making coastal extreme weather phenomena more frequent and dangerous. This rise is primarily driven by the melting of glaciers and ice sheets, alongside the thermal expansion of seawater.

Even relatively small increases in ocean levels can significantly heighten flood risks globally. Higher baseline levels mean that high tides, storms, and large waves start from a more elevated position, turning once-rare events into recurring occurrences. Low-lying coastal areas are particularly vulnerable, as rising waters threaten homes, roads, infrastructure, and previously safe land.

The research emphasizes that the impact extends beyond major storms, as progressive sea-level rise can transform exceptional floods into regular events, leading to higher economic costs and affecting millions of people. Experts stress the necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing adaptation strategies, such as urban planning, coastal ecosystem protection, and community preparedness.
