Sea Lion offshore project faces sovereignty disputes in South Atlantic

The Sea Lion offshore oil project, led by Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum, has become a central point of geopolitical and economic tension between Argentina and the United Kingdom regarding sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

Argentina's government, under President Javier Milei, is seeking to obstruct the project and take legal action against companies involved in hydrocarbon activities in the disputed waters. Experts note that the project faces significant jurisdictional risks due to Argentina's territorial claims, alongside the high costs and technical risks inherent in offshore development.

Despite these political pressures, the companies involved have structured a financing scheme intended to minimize capital exposure. This plan utilizes a combination of senior debt guaranteed by future exports, commercial financing, and internal resources. The project aims to export approximately $1.6 billion annually, supported by commercial agreements to place production in international markets at competitive prices.
