Sea lion rescued in B.C. after year with rubber band around neck

Rescuers in British Columbia have successfully freed a California sea lion that had been living with a thick industrial rubber band cutting into its neck for at least one year. The animal was first spotted near the shores of Metchosin at the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve in October of the previous year.

On October 6, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society team utilized a dart gun to sedate the sea lion. Once the animal was unconscious, the team removed the deep-cutting entanglement, collected blood samples, and tagged the sea lion for future identification. Following the procedure, the sedation was reversed, and the animal has been spotted daily since the rescue.

The operation was a collaborative effort involving the Race Rocks Eco-Guardians from Pearson College UWC, which provided daily monitoring, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which provided vessels and drone support. This rescue follows a similar incident in August, where a different sea lion was freed from a plastic packing band at the same reserve.
