Lombardy health service manages first assisted suicide case
Domenico Zuccarella, a 59-year-old man suffering from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, died on August 25 following the first instance in Lombardy where the regional health service fully managed the medically assisted suicide process. Unlike previous cases where the public health system only verified legal requirements, the regional service organized the entire implementation, including providing medical personnel, drugs, equipment, and the location.
Zuccarella's request was submitted to ASST Ovest Milanese on November 8, 2025. The process took 290 days, significantly exceeding the 145-day maximum limit established by regional guidelines. This delay led his legal team, coordinated by Filomena Gallo of the Associazione Luca Coscioni, to file an urgent court appeal in late May to expedite the procedure.
The case has sparked intense political debate. Pro Vita & Famiglia and members of Fratelli d'Italia criticized the move, arguing that the public health service should focus on life-saving care rather than acting as an executor of death. Conversely, the Associazione Luca Coscioni highlighted the importance of the case in demonstrating that constitutional rulings on assisted suicide must be concretely implemented by regional authorities.
