Sea turtle Boomerang released in Cabras after seventh rescue
A 50-year-old Caretta caretta sea turtle named Boomerang has been released back into the sea at San Giovanni di Sinis beach in Cabras, Italy. The 88-kilogram male had spent three months undergoing rehabilitation at the CReS – Centro di Recupero del Sinis.
Boomerang’s story is notable for its frequency of rescue; the turtle has been recovered seven times since 2010. In each instance, a local fisherman named Alessio discovered the animal in the Marceddì pond and facilitated its transfer to the recovery center. The turtle appears to return to the same area periodically to feed.
The release event was attended by local citizens, visitors, and students from Cabras and Riola. Mayor Andrea Abis highlighted the importance of the recovery center, noting it serves specimens from across Sardinia through a collaborative effort involving the Municipality, the Marine Protected Area, the regional network, and the CNR.
