Sea turtles hatch in Mersin as experts warn against manual transport
In Mersin, Turkey, sea turtle hatchlings are currently making their way to the Mediterranean Sea. At the Davultepe 100. Yıl Nature Park in the Mezitli district, researchers from the Mersin University Sea Turtles Application and Research Center report that approximately 80 percent of the nests have already completed the hatching process.
Dr. Mahmut Ergene noted that about 90 percent of the nests at the Davultepe beach belong to green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). He explained that Mersin is a strategic region for nesting, featuring five key beaches: Anamur, Göksu Delta, Alata, Davultepe 100. Yıl Nature Park, and Kazanlı. In the western areas, Caretta caretta species nest, while green sea turtles nest in the eastern areas from Alata onwards.
Experts have issued a warning to the public and visitors against manually carrying hatchlings to the sea, stating that such actions can cause more harm than good. Instead, they encourage people to assist by removing plastic and solid waste from the beach to clear the hatchlings' path to the water.
