SEADRIF releases US$1.14m for Laos flood relief

SEADRIF has released a US$1.14 million insurance payout to the Government of Lao PDR and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to assist with widespread flooding caused by heavy rainfall. This disbursement follows an initial US$1.1 million payout on September 1, bringing the total funds released for the current flooding to approximately US$2.3 million.

The funding is distributed via a mechanism known as the ‘PEOPLE trigger,’ which releases capital in stages as the number of affected individuals reaches specific thresholds. This method allows for rapid financial response without waiting for lengthy economic loss assessments. More than 375,000 people have been impacted by the heavy rains across the country.

The Lao government’s sovereign policy, supported by the World Bank and multi-donor trust funds, provides up to US$16 million in multi-peril protection. In 2026, the WFP adopted a similar trigger structure, creating the first joint government and humanitarian insurance model in the ASEAN region.
