Seafood industry drives significant employment and value in Finnmark
The seafood industry is a critical driver of employment and economic activity in Finnmark, Norway. According to researcher Helene Jensen from NOFIMA, the sector contributes 7.7 billion NOK in value creation to the county and supports approximately 7,000 jobs related to fisheries and aquaculture.
While the number of fishermen has declined in many parts of the country, Finnmark has seen a gradual increase. However, the region remains highly dependent on the industry per capita. Research indicates that changes in where fish are caught and landed significantly impact onshore activity and value creation.
In a related debate regarding natural resources in Northern Norway and Sami areas, political discussions have emphasized the need for greater local value creation. Proponents argue that instead of merely exporting raw materials, the region should focus on local processing to ensure that jobs, expertise, and economic gains remain within the local communities through stronger value chains and targeted investment support.
