Seagate launches Mozaic platform, targets 50‑TB HAMR drives by 2027

Seagate Technology reported third‑quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $3.11 billion, a non‑GAAP gross margin of 47.0% and free cash flow of $953 million, while maintaining a quarterly dividend of $0.74 per share. CEO Dave Mosley said the Mozaic 4 generation can deliver up to 44 TB per hard‑disk drive, a more than 30% capacity increase over the first generation, using a similar number of disks and heads with only modest material‑cost changes. The company argues that, for massive line‑near storage, HDDs remain more cost‑effective than SSDs.

Seagate’s roadmap extends the Mozaic line to a fifth generation that will exceed 5 TB per platter, enabling drives with ten platters to surpass 50 TB. First shipments of the 50‑TB HAMR (Heat‑Assisted Magnetic Recording) drives are expected in late 2027, with broader availability in 2028. Longer‑term goals include 100‑TB drives by 2032 and even larger capacities beyond that. Competitors such as Western Digital, Micron and Toshiba are noted as pursuing similar high‑density technologies.
