Seagate targets 50TB HDDs for 2027 as AI demand outpaces supply
Seagate Technology announced that its next‑generation Mozaic 5+ platform, based on HAMR (heat‑assisted magnetic recording) technology, will qualify shipments of 50 TB hard‑disk drives in late 2027. The drives will use ten platters per 3.5‑inch chassis to reach the 50 TB capacity, with commercial volume shipments slated for 2028.
The company said that demand from artificial‑intelligence data‑center operators and hyperscale cloud providers has already booked most of the near‑line production capacity through 2028, pushing broader market availability to 2029.
