Sealdah Station undergoes major overnight infrastructure upgrade

Sealdah Station, one of India’s busiest railway hubs, underwent a major seven-hour overnight infrastructure upgrade between August 29 and 30, 2026. The Eastern Railway (ER) executed the project during a midnight to 7 a.m. traffic block to minimize disruption to the millions of passengers who use the station daily.

The engineering work focused on upgrading Diamond Switch Point No. 208B/219A from 52 kg to 60 kg rail standards, which included installing 34.71 meters of new rail and seven prefabricated glued joints. Additionally, the Signal and Telecommunication (S&T) wing replaced aging point machines and updated various cables and bond wires.

The Traction Distribution (TRD) wing also completed overdue maintenance in the Dum Dum Yard, including an overhaul of cantilevers and cleaning of insulators. These upgrades are intended to enhance safety and operational reliability ahead of the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming Durga Puja festival.
