Seamus Coleman considers retirement from professional football
Former Everton captain and Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman has indicated that retirement from professional football is becoming a likely possibility. Speaking on ‘The Overlap Fan Debate’ on Disney+, the 38-year-old stated that while he had initially hoped to continue playing, he has become increasingly content with life away from the pitch.
Coleman, who left Everton after 17 years, noted that spending more time with his family has made the prospect of retirement feel less daunting. Although he has maintained his fitness and has not officially closed the door on a return to competitive play, he described his current mindset as ‘edging towards’ retirement.
In addition to his playing career, Coleman has begun exploring television punditry. Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson previously expressed interest in having Coleman available for the Euro 2028 campaign and has offered to provide a coaching role within the international setup should the defender decide to retire.
