Sean Astin Says Low Lord of the Rings Salary Made Him Sell His House

Sean Astin, known for playing Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, told The Guardian that his total compensation for the three films was about $250,000 – roughly $75,000 per movie – and that he received no residuals despite the series earning nearly $3 billion worldwide.

The modest pay forced him to sell his home at the time, highlighting a “disconnect between the attention he got and the money he had.” He said he is now financially comfortable.

Co‑stars Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and even Cate Blanchett have made similar comments about low salaries, which resulted from New Line Cinema’s decision to shoot all three movies consecutively, leaving the cast without opportunities to renegotiate after each box‑office success.
