Sean Avery moves from NHL to acting, starring in Christopher Nolan’s films
Former NHL forward Sean Avery, who played 580 games over ten seasons with teams including the New York Rangers, has built a second career as a film actor. He has appeared in more than ten feature‑length movies, most recently in three Christopher Nolan productions. In Nolan’s 2023 Best Picture winner *Oppenheimer* he played a minor role credited as “Weatherman,” and in the upcoming epic *The Odyssey* he portrays Laodamas, one of Odysseus’s helmet‑clad warriors.
Avery’s transition to acting was aided by his 2014 appearance on *Dancing with the Stars*, where he met producer Valoree Papsidera, whose husband is Nolan’s longtime casting director. Filming for *The Odyssey* required six months of travel to Greece, Scotland, Iceland, Morocco and Sicily, and involved physically demanding scenes such as mountain climbing and rowing courses.
