Sean Combs' $100M defamation lawsuit moves forward

A federal judge has ruled that Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs can proceed with his $100 million defamation lawsuit against attorney Ariel Mitchell and NewsNation. U.S. District Judge John P. Cronan denied motions to dismiss the claims, which center on televised statements suggesting Combs used drug-laced baby oil to incapacitate victims during sexual encounters.

Combs alleges that Mitchell, appearing on NewsNation, made scientifically baseless claims regarding the use of laced baby oil and falsely suggested that witness Courtney Burgess had access to video recordings of sexual assaults. The judge noted that such claims are ‘capable of being proven false’ and that republishing defamatory statements does not grant automatic protection, even if attributed to another source.

While the judge allowed the claims against Mitchell to move forward, he ruled that NewsNation itself could not be held liable, as the network provided sufficient context for the broadcast. The lawsuit seeks damages for harm to Combs’ reputation and his ability to receive a fair criminal trial.
