U.S. shuts down 270 driving schools in CDL fraud crackdown
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have launched an interagency crackdown on fraud within the commercial driver's license (CDL) industry. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the emergency shutdown of 110 driving schools for failing to enforce English language proficiency requirements, an action linked to approximately 5,000 violations.
An additional 160 schools have been closed due to improper facilities, such as a lack of training classrooms, or the use of unlicensed instructors. In total, the administration has moved to shut down 270 schools. This initiative follows reports that drivers certified by these institutions have been linked to 239 commercial vehicle fatalities.
The crackdown is part of a broader effort to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining commercial licenses through fraudulent means. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin noted that the lack of English proficiency and understanding of road rules among some unlicensed drivers poses a significant danger to public safety. As part of the rollout, the DOT is initiating a nationwide audit of third-party CDL skills testers and state oversight efforts.
