Sean Gardner sentenced to 90 years for filming young gymnasts

Former youth gymnastics coach Sean Gardner has been sentenced to 90 years in federal prison for the production of child pornography. US District Judge Kristi Johnson imposed the maximum penalty, ordering Gardner to serve three consecutive 30-year terms for his crimes.

Gardner pleaded guilty to installing a hidden camera in a bathroom at a gymnastics studio in Purvis, Mississippi, between December 2017 and April 2018. Investigators recovered footage from his computers that showed close-up images of at least 10 minors naked or undressing. The evidence included approximately 50 videos and 400 photographs.

The case has reignited scrutiny regarding the oversight of athlete safety in the United States. Civil lawsuits filed by former students allege that USA Gymnastics and the US Center for SafeSport were notified of Gardner's inappropriate behavior as early as 2017 but failed to remove him from the sport.

While Gardner was sentenced for the Mississippi incidents, investigators originally discovered the footage while looking into separate allegations of sexual abuse involving gymnasts in Iowa, where Gardner had also held a prominent coaching position.
