Sean Kelly, former marathon runner, dies nine months after lung cancer diagnosis

Sean Kelly, a 59‑year‑old elite marathon runner from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was diagnosed with small‑cell lung cancer in February 2025 after experiencing breathing difficulties while running. Doctors gave a prognosis of 10 to 12 months, but after undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy, he died in November 2025, nine months after the diagnosis.

During his life Kelly raised over £20,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and was invited to 10 Downing Street to speak about the importance of lung‑cancer screening. His wife, Julie Kelly, a 62‑year‑old practice manager, said she wants more done around early diagnosis and treatment and will continue his legacy by raising awareness. The couple met in 1985 at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough, married two years later, had two children and celebrated nearly 40 years together. Kelly was a member of Scarborough Athletic Club and remained active in sport until his illness.
