Sean Penn and Adrien Brody to star in Doug Liman’s ‘Snake Island’

Director Doug Liman has begun filming ‘Snake Island,’ a political thriller set in Croatia that explores the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines. The production is expected to continue through late September.

Oscar winners Sean Penn and Adrien Brody have joined the cast to lead the project. The film follows a covert team of Ukrainian divers on a high-stakes underwater mission during the period of escalating geopolitical tensions leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The narrative is inspired by the real-world mystery of the Nord Stream pipeline ruptures in the Baltic Sea, an incident involving military-grade explosives that remains a subject of international investigation. While the identities of those responsible are disputed, German prosecutors have previously charged a former Ukrainian army officer in connection with the sabotage. The film marks a reunion between Liman and Penn, who previously collaborated on the 2010 film ‘Fair Game.’
