Sean Strickland slams UFC pay and recalls jail stint

UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland told the Shawn Ryan Show that his first experience in jail involved exposure to a neo‑Nazi gang and an attempt to adopt its symbols. He described the prison environment, his family's abusive background and how he was drawn into extremist ideology as a teenager.

Strickland also condemned the UFC’s compensation model, calling it “predatory.” He said entry‑level fighters often receive $20,000 per bout, which is quickly eroded by manager fees, taxes and training expenses, leaving many unable to afford rent. He referenced the 2025 antitrust settlement that found the promotion limits athlete earnings to roughly 13‑20 % of its revenue, and noted that foreign fighters from impoverished regions see even modest payouts as life‑changing.
