Sean Taylor fined $22,000 by B.C. nursing regulator for unprofessional conduct
Former nurse and South Okanagan political candidate Sean Taylor was ordered to pay a $22,000 fine after the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives' Disciplinary Committee found him guilty of unprofessional conduct. The committee released a 181‑page decision in June that examined six incidents from 2020.
Three of the incidents were deemed breaches of the college’s professional standards. The violations involved: (1) statements about COVID‑19 health mandates that were interpreted as advocating violence, including a remark about playing paintball against enforcement; (2) comments on the Black Lives Matter movement that similarly suggested violent resistance; and (3) an interview with Global News conducted outside Kelowna General Hospital while wearing scrubs, during which Taylor attempted to “set the record straight” on alleged racism in health care.
Taylor argued that the college lacked jurisdiction over his off‑duty speech and that disciplining him would infringe on his Charter‑protected free‑expression rights, but the committee upheld the fine and the sanctions.
