Search continues for Luigi Cavallari, husband of Italy's family minister, in Lake Vico

Luigi Cavallari, an 84‑year‑old university professor and husband of Italy’s family minister Eugenia Roccella, disappeared on the afternoon of Saturday 27 June after jumping into the volcanic Lake Vico in Viterbo province. The minister promptly alerted authorities. A large‑scale rescue operation has been underway, involving fire‑brigade divers from Rome, Cagliari, Naples and other regions, Carabinieri teams, a helicopter (the “Drago”), motor‑boats, underwater ROVs and high‑frequency DIDSON sonar, as well as aerial and surface drones. Despite exhaustive grid searches of the lakebed, no trace of Cavallari has been found. Adverse weather temporarily halted the effort on 29 June, after which operations resumed. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni publicly condemned the hateful social‑media comments directed at the minister and her family, describing them as “ignoble and inhuman”. The search remains ongoing with no new developments.
