Lizeth Bunshi disappearance sparks extensive search and arrests in Quito

Lizeth Bunshi, a woman from Quito, vanished on 18 July 2026 after leaving her home in the El Tingo area. She was last seen with her boyfriend and a group of friends, and later with a man identified as Cristian Gonzalo V.L., who has since been detained and placed in preventive custody for alleged involuntary disappearance.

Police, the National Police’s specialized missing‑persons unit, and rescue teams have conducted intensive operations around the Machángara river and its tributaries. Search tactics include drones, canine units, controlled descents of steep slopes, and mapping of quadrants. A shoe belonging to Bunshi was recovered near the riverbank, but no further trace of her remains.

Investigators have gathered security‑camera footage, witness testimonies reporting a dispute between Bunshi and the man, and evidence suggesting she may have fallen into the river. The prosecutor ordered a 90‑day investigative instruction and preventive detention for the suspect. The family continues to assist the search, expressing concern that an aquatic search has not yet been conducted.
