Balázs Bús faces harsh conditions in Szeged prison

Balázs Bús, the former mayor of Óbuda and former vice president of the National Cultural Fund, is facing harsh conditions while held in pre-trial detention at the Csillag prison in Szeged. Bús was arrested on June 23 following a raid by the National Tax and Customs Administration in connection with a 17 billion HUF misappropriation case.

According to his partner, Mária Balogh, Bús is being held under strict isolation and special supervision. He is reportedly permitted to leave his cell for only one hour a day for outdoor exercise, which often occurs during midday heat exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Balogh also reported that the cell is infested with bedbugs, which have caused skin issues for the politician.

Bús has maintained his innocence, characterizing the allegations and the legal proceedings as politically motivated. His detention was initially ordered for 30 days and was subsequently extended to three months by the Kecskemét District Court.
