Seasonal allergies and new allergen mapping tools

Distinguishing between seasonal allergies and the common cold is essential for effective symptom management. While both can cause congestion, sneezing, and fatigue, allergies are triggered by environmental substances like pollen, mold, or dust, often resulting in itchy eyes and clear nasal discharge that can last for weeks. In contrast, the common cold is viral, often accompanied by fever or body aches, and typically resolves within a few days.

In Buenos Aires, a new digital tool called the 'Mapa de Plátanos de CABA' has been developed by Luciana Staiano from the University of Buenos Aires Faculty of Agronomy. The map uses georeferenced data to identify concentrations of plane trees, which are known to trigger seasonal allergies. The tool allows residents to identify streets with high tree density—such as those in Palermo, Flores, and Villa del Parque—to help plan routes that minimize allergen exposure.
