Autumn road safety: Experts warn of fog, wet leaves, and lighting risks
As autumn approaches, road safety experts are warning drivers across Central Europe about several seasonal hazards.
One major concern is the danger of wet leaves on roads, which can create a slippery film of wax and dirt, making surfaces nearly as slick as ice. This is particularly hazardous for motorcyclists, cyclists, and e-scooter users. In Germany, legal speed limits marked “bei Nässe” (in wet conditions) apply once a visible film of water covers the entire road surface.
Experts from the ADAC and ACE also warn against over-reliance on automatic lighting systems during fog. Because light sensors often fail to detect diffuse light in foggy conditions, vehicles may remain insufficiently illuminated, making them hard for others to see. Drivers are advised to manually switch on low-beam headlights and avoid using high beams, which can reflect off water droplets and create a “white wall” effect.
Additionally, the transition to winter tires is becoming critical. While there is no fixed date in Germany, drivers are urged to monitor temperatures and road conditions, as frost and ice can appear on bridges and shaded sections even before heavy snowfall.
