Seasonal changes and their impact on art and psychology

The transition to autumn brings significant shifts in both cultural expression and human biology. Historically, the seasonal rhythms of agriculture deeply influenced human life and art. In the 16th century, Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder completed a famous cycle of six large panels titled ‘Monthly Works’ for collector Nicholaes Jongelinck. This series captured the distinct seasonal characteristics of the historical Netherlands, depicting various agricultural labors and environmental changes across the year.

In modern contexts, the reduction in daylight hours and sunlight exposure has a direct biological impact on mental well-being. Psychologists note that decreased light levels can lead to lower serotonin production and increased melatonin, contributing to what is commonly called ‘autumnal spleen’. While many experience mild lethargy or increased sleep needs, others may face more severe psychological challenges. Experts distinguish between temporary seasonal melancholy and clinical depression based on the duration of symptoms and their impact on daily functioning.
