Seasonal hair loss and autumn health trends

Experts suggest that increased hair loss during autumn is often a biological response to summer conditions. Factors such as sun exposure, heat, chlorine, salt, and sweat can sensitize the scalp and hair, leading to a higher number of follicles entering the resting phase, which results in visible shedding weeks later.

To address seasonal hair loss, stylist Álvaro Sámchez notes that caffeine-based hair tonics applied directly to the scalp can help strengthen hair from the root by supporting follicle activity. However, he cautions that these are cosmetic aids and not substitutes for medical treatments for alopecia.

Regarding nutrition, Dr. Malena García Arredondo advises against the assumption that autumn requires universal vitamin or mineral supplementation. She emphasizes that supplements should only be used to correct specific deficiencies rather than as a general seasonal remedy. Furthermore, she notes that current hair loss may reflect physiological stressors from several months prior, such as infections, stress, or surgery, rather than just the change in season.
