Seasonal plant care tips for Christmas cacti and chrysanthemums

Seasonal gardening advice highlights methods for ensuring holiday plants bloom successfully. To encourage a Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) to flower for the holidays, it requires specific light management. Because the plant is sensitive to day and night length, providing 12 to 14 hours of total darkness daily is essential. Using a cardboard box to block artificial light from lamps or televisions for several weeks starting in mid-October can trigger bud formation.

For All Saints' Day, selecting durable chrysanthemums involves timing and careful inspection. It is recommended to purchase plants with many unopened or partially open buds rather than fully bloomed ones to ensure longevity. To prevent premature wilting, especially during warm autumn weather, plants should be purchased closer to November 1st and kept in a bright, cool location with controlled soil moisture.
