Seasonal produce requires specific storage and harvesting techniques
Proper storage and harvesting techniques are essential for preserving the quality of seasonal produce like apples and tomatoes.
For apples, long-term storage depends on selecting specific varieties such as Idared, Jonathan, or Jeptiška. It is critical to exclude any fruit with cracks, bruises, or signs of rot, as damaged fruit can spoil an entire batch. Ideal storage conditions include a cool, dark, and well-ventilated space with temperatures between 2 and 5 °C. Maintaining appropriate humidity is also vital to prevent wilting without encouraging mold through poor air circulation. Additionally, apples should not be washed before being placed in storage.
Regarding tomatoes, the timing of the harvest is heavily influenced by weather patterns. While tomatoes can ripen on the vine if temperatures remain around 20 °C during the day and above 10 °C at night, cold and wet conditions increase the risk of fungal diseases and rot. If a period of cold, rainy weather is forecasted, it is advisable to harvest the fruit early. Healthy green tomatoes can still be ripened indoors, but frost can damage both the fruit and the plant itself.
