E-Scooter safety and regulation trends in Europe

Authorities in Switzerland and Germany are intensifying efforts to regulate e-scooter usage following several high-profile incidents. In Wil, Switzerland, two teenagers were identified after fleeing a police check on an e-scooter traveling at over 77 km/h, an incident that resulted in an injury to a police officer.

In Germany, several cities are implementing stricter controls and prevention campaigns. Frankenthal has issued 750 warnings and over 26,000 euros in fines during its expanded traffic monitoring period. In Hesse, police are conducting awareness campaigns in schools to educate youth on rules regarding age limits, alcohol, and sidewalk usage. Meanwhile, municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia are addressing the rise of illegally tuned e-scooters, which can reach speeds of 45 km/h or higher via simple app modifications or hardware chips.

Safety concerns are further compounded by seasonal weather conditions. The Auto Club Europa (ACE) has issued warnings for cyclists and e-scooter riders regarding slippery autumn roads caused by wet leaves and frost. Additionally, recent accidents in Bad Kreuznach and Hude highlight the risks of high-speed collisions and loss of control on wet surfaces.
