Seasonal tips for autumn gardening and pest management

As autumn approaches, seasonal advice focuses on both gardening and home maintenance. The aster (Asteraceae family) is highlighted as a resilient perennial that thrives in cooler temperatures, providing color from late summer through late autumn. These plants, which can range from 25 to 120 centimeters in height, require direct sunlight and well-draining, humus-rich soil. To ensure healthy growth, it is recommended to plant them with approximately 40 centimeters of space between specimens to accommodate their spreading nature.

Simultaneously, the arrival of colder weather often brings grey stink bugs (Rhaphigaster nebulosa) into residential buildings. These insects seek shelter in homes to overwinter, frequently appearing on windowsills, curtains, and balconies. Experts advise against crushing them, as their defensive mechanism involves releasing a pungent liquid. Effective management involves sealing cracks in doors and windows or using insect screens to prevent entry, rather than attempting to kill them once they are inside.
