Croatian tourism hosts face criticism as seasonal workers reveal poor conditions

Zagreb native Jana Janić began a summer job as a housekeeper at a hotel in Bol on the island of Brač. After two days she posted a video describing shocking conditions in guest rooms – broken TVs, blood, vomit, used condoms and other unsanitary scenes – and said some guests were "disgusting." Her post triggered a flood of comments from other seasonal workers who shared similarly graphic experiences.

Serbian hospitality worker Jasmina, who spent four months on the island of Krk, posted a TikTok detailing a different set of problems: delayed payment until the end of the season, a shared cramped accommodation without a kitchen or proper refrigeration, faulty plumbing, and frequent harassment from the employer. She described the work as traumatic and highlighted that employees were asked to perform duties far beyond their contracts.

Both accounts expose broader concerns about the treatment of seasonal staff in Croatia’s coastal tourism sector, sparking online debate about guest behavior, employer practices, and the need for better protections for migrant and local workers.
