SEAT faces uncertain future as Volkswagen shifts focus to Cupra

The future of the Spanish automaker SEAT is facing uncertainty as the Volkswagen Group appears to shift its focus and resources toward the Cupra brand. While SEAT has not launched a completely new model since 2020 and its product range is aging, Cupra is seeing increased sales and higher profit margins using similar industrial infrastructure.

Volkswagen is reportedly analyzing a gradual withdrawal of the SEAT brand by approximately 2030, prioritizing investments in electric vehicles, software, and new platforms for Cupra. This shift reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry to concentrate capital on high-margin brands.

The situation also highlights long-term challenges for the Spanish industrial model. Since Volkswagen acquired a majority stake in SEAT in 1986, the country has maintained manufacturing capacity but has struggled to develop independent industrial capital, domestic technology, and autonomous decision-making centers to complement foreign investment.
