Seattle and Minneapolis initiate searches for new police chiefs

Major U.S. cities Seattle and Minneapolis are initiating searches for new police chiefs following leadership changes.

In Seattle, Mayor Katie Wilson announced plans to hire a new police chief by the start of 2027. A search advisory committee, co-chaired by retired Washington Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu and Vulcan Real Estate’s Ian Warner, has been established to find a candidate focused on public trust and accountability. The move follows the resignation of former Chief Shon Barnes, who was asked to step down after a fatal shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival.

In Minneapolis, city leaders are conducting a national search for a new police chief and are hosting community listening sessions to gather resident input. The search follows the resignation of Brian O’Hara in May amid allegations of investigation interference. Bill Peterson is currently serving as interim chief and has stated he will not seek the permanent position.
