Seattle couple quits careers to travel by sailboat

Bianca and Charles Boddie, a couple from Seattle, decided to quit their stable professional careers in their 30s to pursue a life of travel. Bianca previously served as a senior financial reporter for Business Insider, while Charles worked as a software engineer for Amazon.

To facilitate their transition, the couple sold their Seattle home to fund the purchase of a sailboat. Before resigning, they utilized detailed financial planning to estimate living expenses, travel costs, and boat maintenance to ensure they could sustain themselves without a regular income.

Since beginning what they call their ‘first retirement’ in June 2025, the couple has sailed over 1,000 miles around the Pacific Northwest, visiting 12 countries and focusing on personal interests and family time.
